A common nocturnal, sluggish, arboreal snake, it occupies grasslands and forests and occasionally, plantations of cardamom, cocoa, coffee, Clove and tea. A venomous snake. Widely distributed in wet and dry zones, while being common at Balangoda and Kitulgala, other localities being Badulla, vicinity of Colombo, Kandy, Matale, Anuradhapura, Rangala, Knuckles, Ratnapura, Avissawella, Pundaluoya, Peradeniya, Neboda, Yatyantota, Moragalla, Kurunegala, Pelmadulla, Karambagala, Puttalam, Kekirawa, Habarana, Dambulla, Medamahanuwara, Gampola, Kosgama, Labugama and Nuwara Eliya.
